mailing in or dropping off your ballot? here’s a checklist to ensure it’s counted.

1. only open your ballot when you’re ready to vote, so that you can keep all the pieces in order and nothing gets lost.
2. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. (also, follow them.)
3. go slowly as you fill in your ballot. We’re all excited to vote, but ballots can be pretty complex, so it’s best to take your time.
4. if your ballot contains an inner secrecy sleeve, be sure you use it. ballots can be spoiled if they are returned without their sleeve.
5. sign where indicated. (this goes back to reading the instructions, and looking for any and all signature lines that apply.)
6. get a witness or notary if your state requires it. (California does not require this. states that do: AL, AK, LA, MS, MO, NC, OK, RI, SC, VA, WI.)
7. seal the outer envelope and affix a stamp, if required.
8. mail your ballot ASAP…better yet, drop it off at a ballot box or early voting facility. early voting 24-hour drop-boxes for sonoma county include:

after you vote: track your ballot. (check your voter information guide for more info) and be aware that you may receive calls/letters/emails from the secretary of state’s office in the days following the election to confirm signature or other details.
